Under the Same Sun is an ongoing photographic project by Asafe Ghalib exploring queer migration, belonging and the complex ways in which ideas of home are carried and remade across borders.
Through intimate portraits and personal narratives, Ghalib brings together individual experiences of migration and belonging, creating space for stories that are often overlooked or reduced to broader narratives about identity and displacement.
First presented in London at Somers Gallery, Under the Same Sun continues to grow through Ghalib’s photographic practice. This new presentation as part of Lines of Flight programme brings together earlier works and a new body of photographs, expanding the project and opening new connections between its stories.

This exhibition is part of Acts of Looking, the final chapter of Lines of Flight, CASA’s year-round multi-arts programme curated by Gabriela Román González at Brixton House. Across exhibitions, residencies, dance, performance and celebration, Acts of Looking turns attention towards what is often overlooked, exploring how different ways of seeing might change the way we live.

About the artist, curator and partners

(b. 1990, Nilópolis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) is an artist working primarily in photography in collaboration with LGBTQIA+ communities. Self-taught, Asafe explores his identity and relationship to the environments he inhabits, using photography as a means of survival and to tell neglected stories. Raised in a religious family, his work embraces rebellion to reclaim identity and history, challenging dominant ideas about masculinity, gender, sexuality, and representation of LGBTQIA+ people.

Working across exhibitions, live programmes, and interdisciplinary art formats as a spaces for public inquiry, collective exchange and new forms of participation. Her practice centred on contemporary and process-led art, and more porous models of exhibition-making across disciplines. Her experience spans major institutions, festivals, and independent platforms, including collaborations with Cittadellarte – Fondazione Pistoletto, Tate Modern, Galleria Continua, ZONAMACO, and Frieze London. She serves as Head of Exhibitions and Programmes at CASA, Trustee of LADA and founder of Not The Owners and Mentoras Creativas.
